Kerala, Gods own Country is gifted with a very pleasant climate with moderate rainfall and temperature. The main reason for this is the nearness of sea and the Western Ghats which acts as a barrier to heavily blowing winds from the western and northern region. Nature’s fury hardly does act upon the southernmost state of India and calamities are seldom reported. This makes the southern tip very safe to live. The weather conditions in Kerala are mainly classified into three namely the summer season weather, the winter season weather and the monsoon weather which includes showers and thunderstorms. The summer season is mainly during the February to May span where the children enjoy their vacations under the scorching heat of the sun. He shines elegantly above the horizon. While some of the farmers work hard to provide water to their crops, this climate is adequate for certain crops and plantations which require less water. Comparatively higher temperature and humid atmospheric nights provide an indication of the oncoming summer season. While Mercury touches 40 degree Celsius in most of the Indian states, Kerala is blessed with the cool winds from the Arabian Sea and barrier formed by the Ghats. Rarely do heavy temperatures strike and even if they strike it’s mostly on the northern districts alone.

The post summer season marks the monsoon season in Kerala and to be precise the monsoon season is of two types, The North east monsoon and the South west monsoon. The classification is based on how they occur i.e. in which of the months they do occur. The South west monsoon is the prominent among them and it gives adequate rainfall for the complete year. Farmers invest a lot on these rains as it’s more predictable. The monsoon gets its name from the winds which bring the rain to south India. This monsoon is termed as “Edavapathi” locally as it occurs right in the middle of Edavam, a Malayalam month. The unique feature of this monsoon is that there is rare chance of lightning and thunder to occur. The rainy season is quiet and heavy falls are expected. This monsoon floods up all the rivers and provides enough water to the dwellers also. Severe rainfall is experienced during the season. Just after these monsoon winds stop and start packing after their show, the next monsoon or the North east monsoon arrives without giving a break to the viewers. It’s also termed the retreating monsoons. It’s also known as “Thulavarsham”. This monsoon marks its arrival by late October with heavy rains followed by lightning and thunderstorm. It may extend till November. Heavy damage to property and life is often a result of North east monsoons. Precautionary steps are always directed by the respected officials.

After the downpour, the silence and chillness of the winter season arrives. Mostly at the end of November and extending to February, this season marks the coolest climate and lowest rainfall. The weather variations in Kerala are quite predictable and almost the same throughout the years.
